Description

O Guardador de Rebanhos is a collection of poems written by Fernando Pessoa under the heteronym Alberto Caeiro. The poems were written in 1914 but published in 1925 in the magazine Athena. According to Pessoa, Alberto Caeiro was a shepherd who lived in the outskirts of Lisbon and was detached from rest of the world. Caeiro was very much in tune with the Mother Nature and is happy with his life. The corruptness and madness of the modern society do not disturb him. Here, the herd of sheep is symbolic, which reminds Pessoa of his childhood years. Pessoa longs to be like Alberto Caeiro to enjoy life in its fullest and live in peaceful and serene environment. Through this poem, Pessoa beautifully expresses the Portuguese heritage.
